Mercer Merit Scholarships

University Merit Scholarships

Upon admission to Mercer, all students are evaluated for eligibility to receive a merit scholarship. University scholarships are funded through endowed and/or restricted scholarship funds and must be applied to tuition costs only unless otherwise indicated.

Additional scholarship competitions are held for admitted students where invited students can compete for additional named merit scholarships which are added to a student’s financial aid package. If a student is awarded a premier, full-tuition, scholarship, the full scholarship will replace all other merit awards.

Merit scholarships are renewable for 4 years (8 semesters) for students enrolled in the Traditional Residential Program on Mercer’s Macon campus.

Other Talent and Service-based Scholarships

These scholarships are given for specific talent and service:

Eligibility: Those who plan to enter a full-time Christian vocation after graduation are eligible for Ministerial Aid. An annual letter of intent is required from the student, as well as an annual letter of recommendation from the student’s current pastor. These students must also meet each semester with the Dean of Chapel in order to be approved for Ministerial Aid, and enroll in at least 5 hours of Christianity courses per year.
Amount: 85% of Tuition and Fees or 85% of Calculated Need whichever is greater. Minimum award of $1000
Renewal criteria: Application required in Scholarship Universe each year.

Covers the cost of housing up to the current academic year Cost of Attendance (COA) housing allocation less entitlements (Pell and Georgia Tuition Equalization Grant). If a cadet elects a more costly housing option, the cadet is free to do so but will be held responsible to cover the difference in cost. The room and board scholarship also covers the unlimited meal plan. If a student’s housing or board charges are lower than the COA amount, the ROTC Room/Board Scholarship is reduced to actual charges. If a student does not participate in a meal plan, that student automatically forfeits the board (meals) portion of the scholarship.

Scholarship Renewal Information

To maintain academic scholarships, students must enroll for a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester- Fall and Spring (students enrolled in less than 12 hours are not eligible for academic scholarships and must submit an appeal to the Financial Planning Office for approval to receive their merit award).
The minimum standard for the renewal of merit-based scholarships is a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (on a 4-point scale) for undergraduate studies. Specific scholarships and/or academic programs may require a higher grade point average.
Cumulative grade point averages and amount of credit hours will be checked at the end of each spring term. A student who fails to meet the requirements listed above is given a provisional period of one year.
- At the end of the provisional period, if the student has maintained an academic load of at least 12 semester hours each term and now has a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0, their scholarship is approved to continue as long as the student maintains the enrollment and GPA requirements listed above.
- If, at the end of the provisional term, a student’s GPA is less than 2.0, the student will be required to meet with the Office for Student Success to create a success plan. Once the student has created a success plan, the student will be eligible for 50% of their original merit award. Continuation of the scholarship will be based on meeting their success plan requirements. The student’s file will also be reviewed for any additional need-based eligibility.
Students who receive a tuition benefit through their parent’s (or their own) employment at the University may not qualify for any University scholarships or grants.

Graduating Seniors

If a graduating student is approved for less-than-full-time enrollment, any original Mercer funds awarded to the student are pro-rated based on the number of hours enrolled. The proration is based on Mercer’s tuition costs, which are based on a 15-hour enrollment.

For example, a $10,000 scholarship prorated for 8 credit hours would calculate as the following:

$10,000 /15 hours = $666.67 which results in 8 hours X 667 = $5,336
